Why Core of Knowledge for Laser Safety Officer ?

As a Laser Safety Officer, you are responsible for upholding a high standard of laser safety knowledge and commitment to 'prevention of injuries'. According to the ANSI standard ANSI Z136.1 "Safe Use of Lasers", a laser safety officer (LSO) is an individual designated by a company, university or governmental institution, who has the responsibility to monitor the safe usage of lasers in a work environment by defining the proper control measures according to the different levels of laser hazards.

*In order to excel as an LSO in the area of Lasers and IPL treatments; it is essential to undertake a Core of Knowledge certifications. The 'Core of Knowledge' itself represents a body of knowledge that underpins the safe use of lasers and IPL in clinical practice. It is intended to be undertaken by all staff using laser (class 3 and 4) and non‐laser (IPL and LED) light sources in a range of applications, including medical, surgical, dental and aesthetic practices. The primary aim of this course is to provide you with an understanding of the basic principles of laser safety and the role of LSO. This course has been formulated to satisfy the training requirements contained in the September 2015 MHRA Device Bulletin "Lasers, intense light source systems and LEDs – guidance for safe use in medical, surgical, dental and aesthetic practices".

In order to apply for a 'special treatment license' and CQC registration for your practice, all Clinicians must have a valid completion certificate in the 'Core of Knowledge' sector which needs to be certified and formulated by a Laser Protection Advisor (LPA).
